Designed for two cycling enthusiasts
The design of the Williams/Hottinger Residence is for a couple who are cycling enthusiasts and who love the outdoors
They wish to have a house that fits their healthy way of living, is comfortable and filled with natural light. In addition to the functions of a house, their one special request is to have a large four-car workshop where they can enjoy the constant tuning of their many bikes and outdoor equipment.
The residence is an L-shaped house that embraces the garden, which is open to the neighboring lot. The main idea of the house is achieved through the section of the house. The house has a series of clerestories that capture the morning light and allow it to cascade down from the third floor exercise area to the main living area of the house on the ground floor.
In addition, the main view of the house is opened toward the courtyard garden allowing the northern light to fill the house throughout the day.
The shorter arm of the L is a two-story structure with a third-floor patio. This volume contains the requested garage/workshop space and the master suite. The garage space opens along both the west and east walls to serve a dual function as a covered breezeway looking into the garden.
The difference in levels, the shed and flat roof planes and contrasting horizontally and vertically ribbed cladding help create different personalities and separate the two arms visually. Additionally, the long arm of the L is 3-stories to match the neighboring house, while the short arm of the L is 2 stories to be commensurate with the other neighboring residence.
The Williams/Hottinger Residence blends into the fabric of the community with its complementary scale and understated design.
