Townhomes to suit an evolving neighborhood

The site of the Rose Townhouses is a corner lot in Houston's West End neighborhood, an eclectic combination of older, traditional homes and newer residences built to respond to string interest in this well-located area. Each of the three townhouses provides approximately 2,100 square feet of space that includes 2 bedrooms, a balcony study, 2 1/2 baths and a 2-car garage.

The spatial concept for each of the Rose Townhouses is two intersecting volumes. The first volume is a rectangular box clad with painted metal siding. This volume contains the living room, dining room, kitchen and a study that is open to the space below. The roof of the rectangular volume forms an observation deck that gives each townhouse a panoramic view of downtown Houston.

The second volume of each townhouse is also box-shaped, but with an arched roof. This volume contains the private functions of the townhouses, the master suite and master bath. The arched volume is opened toward the east allowing clerestories to capture and direct light into the master suite in the morning and to reflect light into the living room throughout the day.

The exteriors of the townhouses incorporate many building materials currently used in the neighborhood. These include traditional materials such as painted metal siding and stucco which was used to cover the curved volumes and stairwells. The bases of the townhouses are sheathed in wood siding, another common material used throughout the area.
