Residence that addresses owners’ passion for race cars
The Malkhassian’s enthusiasm for auto racing produced a unique requirement for the design of their new residence: incorporate an 8-car garage with a fully equipped mechanic’s shop for their race cars.
The house is divided into three parts: the main house containing public areas; the couple’s private living quarters; and the substantial garage. The main house is placed to the front (west) of the lot while the living quarters are set toward the back. The garage runs along the length of the north edge of the site, between the main house and living quarters. A lap pool runs along the edge of the site opposite the garage, linking the house and living quarters from that side as well, and framing an interior garden with an additional circular pool.
The main house is conceived as two intersecting volumes. This section of the house has three levels designed to allow natural light to cascade from the structure’s full height, recalling a cubist waterfall. In the front, a covered balcony opens directly to a beautiful oak tree and a view of Memorial Park.
The garage has a 14-foot ceiling which creates a tall vertical space for the cars to be lifted and worked on. In addition, the garage is large enough to accommodate the transport trailer the couple uses to take their vehicles to events. The back of the garage houses the mechanic’s shop. Along the southern side of the garage, two 18-foot-wide doors open to the pool area, allowing the owner to interact with his family while working on the cars. The roof of the garage forms a long deck containing an outdoor kitchen for entertaining.
