For a designer, travel is the best education you can give to yourself. Every culture, every city, every person, every street, every corner that you experience holds incredible lessons to be learned.
To not just experience different cultures, but to be able to work in them is an incredible gift I've received. After I completed my master's degree at Columbia University in New York, I had remarkable opportunities to work with two renowned contemporary architects. The first was a two-year engagement with Emilio Ambasz, in New York. After that, two additional years with the acclaimed Gino Valle in Udine, Italy gave me a crucial perspective on architecture. Those years taught me about connection and how construction and design are parts of one process. I learned that it is necessary to feel the spirit of the materials and work with it, almost like a sculptor, making design only a small part of the building process. They taught that the materials are part of the building, the building is part of the city, and all the parts make up the whole, creating the canvas on which the architect builds.
The opportunities I've had manifest themselves in our designs, consciously and subconsciously. These experiences have personally enriched my life in the way they help shape the manner in which our designs respond to our clients' needs and aspirations.
